As Election Day approaches, Constantine Public Schools would like to share information to help our community better understand how public school funding works and why operating millages are so important.
π‘ Did You Know?
Public schools are funded through three main sources:
ποΈ State funding
πΊπΈ Federal funding
π Local tax dollars
When the State of Michigan sets its per-student funding, it assumes that each district is collecting its local tax portion through an operating millage.
If a district does not collect those local tax dollars, the state does not make up the difference β meaning the district receives less per-student funding than whatβs prescribed.
π For Example:
If the stateβs per-student funding target is $10,050, and $1,000 of that amount is expected to come from local taxes, a district that does not collect its operating millage would only receive $9,050 per student.
Operating millages are a vital part of how schools are funded. They help ensure that students continue to have access to quality programs, dedicated staff, and essential classroom resources.
